Join our joyful retreat in the beautiful north woods! There are no artistic requirements, although of course, artists and calligraphers may well find it enriching! Just bring a willingness to be open, and a playful spirit!

Tuition: $650 per person
Tuition + Meals: $975 per person
With Shared Lodging Package: $1,475 per person
With Private Lodging Package: $1,895 per person

A 5.5% tax on tuition/meals and 12% tax on lodging packages will be added to any full payments made online. Deposits will not include tax and will be applied to overall retreat registration. Communication shall follow all online deposits showing applicable remaining fees, including taxes.

Companion Rates are available for one companion over the age of 18 and one per registered retreat participant.


We will cultivate personal tranquility along with moments of shared silence and play. Each day will begin with mindful movement of body with breath followed by contemplative meditation. We’ll use the practice of shodo, close observation, sacred geometry, playful practices using both sides of the brain, unusual tools used in unusual ways, to expand our vision and intention. Guided relaxation and Yoga Nidra meditation will be offered at the close of each evening.

Most of all we’ll emerge resilient from our time together, replenished with deeper self-awareness and truer images from the inside out.

Peter Fraterdeus is a two-time NEA grant recipient (1980, 1985), founder of Emptiness Design Studio (, calligrapher, type designer, letterpress printing and eternal student of whole systems and the nature of consciousness.

Developed the seminar series Make a Mindful Mark, which incorporates the calligraphic brush, drawing and Zen exercises to develop resilience, mindfulness and leadership with insightful decisive action.

Peter has taught book arts, letterpress, calligraphy, typography, information architecture, and web design internationally (SAIC-Chicago, CCCBA-Chicago, Colorado College–Colorado Springs, IUAV–Treviso, Berlin, Barcelona, etc) After decades of formal study of western letterform traditions, including letter carving, type-design, and medieval manuscript techniques, he is now also studying East Asian Shodo (Zen Calligraphy) and the daily practice of calligraphy at his studio.

Studied with renowned master type designer Prof Hermann Zapf (RIT summer sessions 1985-86), Welsh master calligrapher and inscriptional designer Ieuan Rees (May-Sept 1981, etc) and Aikido Master Zen Calligrapher Kaz Tanahashi Sensei (2013-present), among others.

Kate Miller is a holistic coach specializing in well-being, offering innovative methods to develop mindfulness and resilience in everyday life. Kate’s study of Yogic Science is aligned with the Himalayan Institute and is certified in Yoga Nidra. She is a Licensed Spiritual Practitioner and has worked in the field of addictions for over thirty years. Her experiences as a spiritual practitioner, counselor, yoga and meditation teacher are weaved together into her coaching practice - offering a safe space where inward reflection, self-acceptance, and body, mind, spirit integration, can take place. Kate has worked in a variety of settings with diverse populations facilitating groups and retreats for spiritual growth, creating community through yoga, and teaching mindfulness in the corporate setting.

Lodging and Meal Rates & Info

All lodging costs listed are per person/per night costs. Due to the format of retreats, meal plans are required of all participants to maximize time with other students and instructors, while still providing time to explore Bayfield and the surrounding community.
