Painting on silk is very forgiving and thoroughly enjoyable. Its gentle nature will offer your creativity an open door. We are coming together to navigate our own paths down the silk road. With good fellowship and creativity, we will all enjoy the journey!

You will be introduced to silk painting using steam set dyes, gutta resist and various time honored techniques. I will assist in fine tuning your ideas and visions with a healthy nod to composition and design.

We use Chinese silk, (8” x 54” & 18” x 18”) and the finest steam set dyes available. With a limited class size you will have access to a good amount of personal instruction. I will also paint numerous demonstrations during our time together.

You will receive class preparation details and further instructions upon registration. Your materials fee is included in the course tuition, and covers everything you create, including processing and shipping. Steam set dyes require time and diligence to process. Your finished pieces will be sent to you within 2 weeks after our retreat.

For inspiration, you can bring along items for personal resource material such as:

  • Flowers

  • Leaves

  • Still life components

  • Drawings

  • Journals

  • Photographs

  • Fabric

  • Waterproof stencils, or whatever you feel would be great fun to include in your images.

With any painting endeavor, it’s a good idea to wear stainable clothing, an apron, or a big old shirt. Latex gloves are optional, I don’t use them, as the dye will wash off with comet, and I like the tactile experience while painting. Please bring a pair or two if you need them.

The Austin Miller Studio overlooks Lake Superior near where I was born. The Lake, magnificent in its power and beauty, will take your breath away, stop all thought, and put you squarely in the moment. That’s heady stuff for an artist. I paint to nourish my soul, it is that simple.

I am primarily a watercolorist, though I thoroughly enjoy silk painting and working with transparent acrylics as well. Painting with water based mediums brings about a certain peace as its fluid nature leads you down the creative path, opening the gates and setting imagination free. This journey brings forth a powerful element of who we are.

I have instructed painting seminars for 25 years, with the objective of mentoring students in finding and developing their individual passion for art. During many international and national painting journeys, we have formed lifelong friendships, made fabulous memories, outstanding art and had fun doing it. You can read more on my website .
