Class description
Join us for a weekend to ground, nourish, and stoke the creative spark with yoga, self-reflection, nature, writing, art making, and music.
Our setting is the utterly unique and luxe Wild Rice Retreat, one of Condé Nast’s “23 Best Places” and one of Travel and Leisure Magazine’s “13 Best U.S. Resorts for Reconnecting with Nature,” the naturally gorgeous locale of the south shore of Lake Superior will lull us to a rejuvenating rest for body and soul, as well as serenades by your host, musician & teacher Mary Bue.
There will be movement, art making with an “intuitive collage experience,” discussion on the creative process, self-reflection in meditation and journaling, and luxurious/enlivening yoga asana. The world-class sauna is available twenty four hours to warm up on the chilly autumn nights, and crisp hikes and lake views await.
Enjoy nourishing meals (vegan & vegetarian) from Wild Rice’s James Beard nominated restaurant, and be instructed & serenaded by Mary Bue as well as unique programming from Wild Rice’s talented staff.
Everything is optional, pick and choose as you wish.
At this retreat, we will spend time to gather insight, reflect, and release. How can we keep our creative fires burning for a healthy, productive, rejuvenating winter? How can we burn away what no longer serves our highest? We’ll set intentions to enliven, focus on, and protect our brightest creative spark.
ABOUT SONIC BLESSINGS
“Sonic Blessings” comes from a phrase dubbed by Tara Cindy Sherman (Mary’s dear friend and teacher). During their four years together of crafting Goddess immersions and workshops, between the deep relaxation of Yoga Nidra and the silent rejuvenation of savasana, Mary would offer songs and mantras during that poignant space of rest, which grew to be called “sonic blessings.”
A multi-instrumentalist and collector, you will be serenaded multiple times and ways throughout this weekend. A lifelong singer with an earthy alto vocal range, Mary will offer original songs from her collection of over eight albums, sacred mantras chanted in Bhakti (devotional) style, hymns & blessing songs, and more. Enjoy sounds of the piano, guitar, ukulele, harmonium, sitar, chimes, bells, drum, and more.
ABOUT INTUITIVE COLLAGE EXPERIENCE
Allow a feast for the eyes, mind, and heart as we spend an evening paging through stacks of magazines (provided) and cutting out images and words that resonate. We’ll assemble collages or vision boards in this intuitive experience and may be surprised with the art that emerges. Feel free to bring your own magazines, photographs, or images that call to you to add to your special collage and enjoy a private concert as you create.
ABOUT YOGA PRACTICES
Every day join us for holistic yoga practices, informed and inspired by the Viniyoga tradition (TKV Desikachar, son of Sri Krishnamacharya, brought to the west most recognizably by Gary Kraftsow).
Viniyoga is a low-intensity flowing practice that places special focus on warming, strengthening and stabilizing the low back. Flowing with the breath in steady, repetitive, and meditative movements that are said to help re-pattern dysfunctional movement patterns, bring focus, awareness, and connection to the body and breath. These offerings start with the body, then after a brief rest, transition to gentle guided breath practice, and meditation.
biography
I am a lifelong musician, traveler, poet, journal writer, vegan, Nada Yogi, adventure seeker, retreat guide, solitude craver, and yoga instructor of 14+ years ~ Yoga Alliance 500-hour certified, continuing education provider. I’m based out of Minneapolis, roaming this beautiful world as much as possible. I am grateful to be named “Best Songwriter” of 2020 by City Pages and have been writing music and performing since 1998, with 8 albums out now.
I believe deeply in the richness of a creative life that is ever unfolding. One doesn’t have to play an instrument, write a novel, paint like Frida, or write like Mary Oliver to live a creative life. Every moment that unfolds offers opportunities to make something beautiful. While this may seem like a lot of pressure, rest in knowing that potential is ever unfolding, even in the silent and restorative times (like sleeping!). I look forward to sharing this beautiful & inspiring place with you. Please let me know if you have ANY questions. I am pretty much an open book (most of which can be discovered in this website or listening to my music!).
