Claire YoungThe Milky Way Retreat

July 9-13, 2026 Go back
a woman smiling at camera

100 years ago, 100 percent of Americans could see the Milky Way on a clear night. Today, 80 percent of us can’t.

As industry sprawls across our land and dark skies become increasingly rare, treat yourself to the wild shores of Lake Superior where the dusty strands of our spiral galaxy still wind across the pitch blackness of a late summer night (we’re talking class 2 on the Bortle scale).

The Milky Way Retreat is a science-backed, nature-based experience designed to help you slow down, regulate your nervous system, and reconnect—with the stars, the land, and your body.

For thousands of years, these stars have inspired poetry, scientific discovery, religion, navigation, and seasonal wisdom.

What will you find when you look up? ????

What This Retreat Is

The Milky Way Retreat is a nervous system reset in nature.

Over four days, we blend science-backed practices with land-based experiences to help you slow down, reconnect, and restore your natural rhythms.

Anchored in nature, each day blends:

  • Informative sessions
  • Forest walks
  • Somatic breathwork
  • Reflection + rest
  • Fireside chats + mythic storytelling
  • Nights spent under truly dark skies

On the clearest night, we’ll search for the galactic core — the same river of stars that guided humans for thousands of years.

How It Works

Each day includes a mix of structured and open time — ideal for napping, wandering, trips to the Apostle Islands, or quiet moments with a journal.

Follow what your body actually needs.

Rest. Explore. Join in. Opt out.

GATHER – Arrive, land, and connect. Meet your fellow retreat-goers, ease into the rhythms of rest, and step gently into sacred time.

????ATTUNE – Slow down and listen. Let your senses reawaken through nature, myth, and quiet noticing.

????REMEMBER – Drop deeper. Explore ancestral stories, cosmic perspectives, and your place within the larger whole.

????INSPIRE – Follow your wonder. Let beauty, joy, and intuition lead the way. Begin to harvest what this retreat has stirred awake within you.

????EMBODY – Carry it home. Mark your return with meaning and carry the magic into your everyday life.

Retreat Sessions

Included private sessions:

  • Milky Way 101
  • Night Sky Photography Tips
  • Silver Branch Perception + Awakening Your Wild Nature
  • The Art of the Ramble
  • Milky Way Magic Ritual
  • Great Lakes + Milky Way Myths (guest storyteller)

You’ll also have access to Wild Rice Retreat daily programming like yoga, forest bathing, sound baths, and more.

Why It Works

This isn’t just a vibe, it’s physiology.

Research shows that:

  • Time in nature reduces stress hormones
  • Awe decreases rumination and increases well-being
  • Darkness supports circadian rhythm and sleep quality
  • Slow, mindful movement regulates the nervous system

Testimonial from 2025 attendee:

“I can’t recommend the Milky Way Retreat enough. If you’re someone who

values rest, reflection, good company, and tend to hesitate about

spending money on yourself, this experience is truly worth it.

I left feeling calmer, more grounded, and really grateful I said yes. If you’re on the fence, I’d wholeheartedly encourage you to go.”

Important Notes ????

Milky Way viewing is weather dependent. We’re meeting on a new moon at the ideal time of year, and the area offers excellent conditions, but the exact night we chase the stars will depend on the skies.

Cloud cover may prevent us from seeing the core in full, but you’ll leave the retreat with the tools and knowledge to find the Milky Way again in a dark sky near you.

In short: bring flexibility. We take our cues from nature. ????

Also: the Milky Way looks different to the naked eye than in long-exposure, enhanced photos. It's softer, but no less powerful. (Curious about what you might see? Here’s a great blog post from an astrophotographer.)

biography

Hi! I’m Claire. I haven’t stopped talking about the Milky Way since the first time I saw it. I’m a retreat guide, ceremonialist, artist, and writer. My background in journalism and travel reporting trained me to find the best use of vacation days. My certifications in somatic anxiety coaching and seasonal wisdom facilitation allow me to create immersive, soul-centered experiences grounded in nature.

My goal is to help you to reconnect with your senses and find some inner quiet in really beautiful places. I love understanding humans as cyclical beings and seeing how lunar, menstrual, and seasonal cycles offer us actionable wisdom to support our everyday lives.

Born and raised in the Great Lakes region, I know the magic of summer days and nights on the lake.
