Join artist Dietlind Vander Schaaf for a five-day painting workshop at Wild Rice Retreats. Open to all levels, this workshop will combine mindful mark making, meditative drawing, collage, monoprinting, building luminous layers, and working with a variety of mixed media to create unique works of art. Your stay will include delicious, nourishing meals featuring local ingredients, walks in nature, daily yoga classes, and a beautiful sauna and rain room experience.

Class description
This is a Wild Rice Retreat–hosted retreat, part of our thoughtfully curated programming. We proudly partner with skilled retreat leaders to bring guided experiences to our resort—designed to inspire, nourish, and support personal growth in alignment with our mission.
Join artist Dietlind Vander Schaaf for a five-day painting workshop at Wild Rice Retreats. Open to all levels, this workshop will combine mindful mark making, meditative drawing, collage, monoprinting, building luminous layers, and working with a variety of mixed media to create unique works of art. Your stay will include delicious, nourishing meals featuring local ingredients, walks in nature, daily yoga classes, and a beautiful sauna and rain room experience.
Materials used include encaustic paint and medium, Pigment Sticks, Blending Medium, Pan Pastel, charcoal, graphite, oil pastel, Deco Foil, and India ink.
Begin your day with a light breakfast, practice yoga, enjoy brunch, take walks in nature, paint for hours, and then slip into the sauna. Each student will have 1:1 time with the instructor. Participants should have a basic mastery of encaustic technique.
biography
Dietlind Vander Schaaf has exhibited at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, The Fuller Craft Museum, and On Center Gallery, among others, and been featured in Maine Home + Design, Decor Maine, UPPERCASE, and Downeast magazines.
Vander Schaaf is a Core Instructor for R&F Handmade Paints, an Ampersand Ambassador, and the former president of New England Wax. She has taught workshops throughout the country, including Haystack, Arrowmont, Castle Hill, Snow Farm, Penland, Maine College of Art, R&F, and internationally at Zijdelings in The Netherlands, Essence of Mulranny in Ireland, and Kunstfreiraum in Switzerland. The recipient of grants from the Maine Arts Commission and International Encaustic Artists, as well as a Tending Space Artist Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation, she is represented by Portland Art Gallery and Artemis Gallery. Vander Schaaf is a 500 hr Kripalu yoga instructor with specialty training in meditation, advanced asana, Ayurveda, vinyasa, and pranayama.

Supply List
Students should bring the following items.
- Scissors or a cutting mat and Exacto knife
- Assorted drawing materials (recommend graphite, pencil, charcoal, Stabilos); some will be provided as well, but bring drawing materials you like to work with in your studio
- Small brushes for working with ink and water-based media
- small portable watercolor or gouache set
- Hake brushes for encaustic (recommend 8-10 brushes including one 4" brush); not all of your brushes need to be hake, but they work best for smooth layers. You can also bring some smaller natural bristle brushes for mark-making.

- a roll of parchment paper for bringing work home
- low tack tape (frog tape, painter's tape, or delicate surfaces tape)
- 8-10 wood panels (unprimed) or Ampersand Encausticbord (nothing larger than 14" x 14")
- Papers for collaging (any art papers or scrap paper)
